I have been married to my best friend for 23 years, and have

always shared everything between us.  Except for this posting.

Our credit cards have gotten so out of hand and I don’t know

what else to do.  I have handled all the bills over the years and

have always been able to roll higher credit card balances to new

offers of balance transfers for lower APR’s.  This meant lower

monthly payments.  Now no one is offering balance transfers

anymore and they have jacked the APR’s up so bad that each

month gets harder & harder.

We both took 401K loans out to pay off some of the higher

balances, then the new higher APR’s basically put us back to

the higher payments each month.  Now our paychecks are lower

each week, yet our credit card payments are just about as high

as before.  My husband thinks things are better now but they are

worse and it’s hard to act like all is well with this weight on my

shoulders.  I can’t bear the thought of dumping this on him. 

He works so hard to provide (I work full time as well) and it

would break my heart to see him even close to feeling like I do.

Now that we are older and established, we don’t need material

things now and we are horribly aware of the mess we got ourselves into.  I try to pay a little more each month but it doesn’t seem to help.

We cannot use those “programs” that help pay off CCD debt,

because we can’t lose our credit or access to cash.  But I may

have to consider them as last resort.

My mom has lived with us for over 15 years now and we are her sole providers.  She is 78 and in reasonably good health now but she only has Medical.  If something should happen to her, we have to be able to access funds to help her.

I know that if we can get out of this somehow that we will NEVER

get ourselves into this mess again.  We need help now with our

mistakes, but believe me when I say we have learned from this

and this mess will NOT be repeated.

I guess I’m feeling like it’s hopeless because our future isn’t looking too bright.  We have not had a “normal” marriage due to mom living with us.  We don’t have a lot alone time together.  We often talk about what our future holds as far as growing old together and having a nice little cabin in the woods to retire in but I don’t see how that can ever happen for us but I keep praying.
