I was abused and homeless and
now I am a Doctor...buried under my student loans
 |
I am going to keep this as short as possible, while
still trying to get my story across. I am, like
many other people in this country being buried with my
hopes and dreams under a mountain of student loan
debt. I have come from nothing, determined to
make something of myself and help others in the
process. I did not stop long enough on the road
to my success to consider the fact that I would hardly
be able to survive on my salary after making my
enormous $1600.00 per month loan payment. A
total loan debt of $160,000. |
The summary:
 |
I grew up with my 2 younger sisters, my loving Mother
and an extremely abusive and psychotic father,
constantly living in fear and unable to leave for my
Mother’s lack of education/job opportunities, fear
and lack of money. With the constant threat of
being killed or molested by my own father, I swore
that I would grow to be financially independent and
never be in a similar situation.
|
 |
When I was 12 we finally left for good. For the
next 3 years we moved from shelter to shelter, state
to state and were eventually homeless. |
 |
We eventually moved in with my grandparents, the most
loving and wonderfully generous people I have ever
known. I lived there with around 8 other people
(rotating in and out) for the next 14 years of my
life. The majority of my family has at one time
or another been addicted to drugs and/or alcohol,
including my Mother. “Not me”, I swore it as
I watched the people I loved destroy their futures,
including my Aunt, her husband, my Uncle, my Sister
and eventually my cousins. |
 |
My Grandparents were my rock, supporting me however
they could, giving me gas money to get to community
college and then going to the local Church for free
food. Selfless. |
 |
I graduated from Community College, then State
University, and then I received my Doctorate in
Physical Therapy. Not without high interest rate
loans from private lenders, but I was determined to
make it. I am the first person in my family to
graduate from high school, or college, and they
couldn’t be more proud. |
 |
If they had the money, they would give it to me with
no questions asked. However, my family has
struggled through life, always. I wish I could
help my Grandparents the way they helped me, but I can
barely support myself. I love being a
Physical Therapist and if I could afford to work for
free and help people like my Grandparents, I would do
it in a heartbeat. I know that this is a long
shot, I hate even asking people to help me. |
 |
I hope that anyone who donates to me understands that
I would and WILL pay it forward. Whether
you choose to donate to me or not, thank you for
reading my story, I am sure there are quite a few
people just like me out there. Love.
